Air purifiers available from the market vary from model to model by the specific purposes for which they are designed. What air purifier is best for you will be determined by the kind of indoor air impurities you want eliminated.

Ionizing Air Purifiers

If removing smells is your priority, an ionizing air purifier is worth considering. Ionizing air purifiers are said to be the most effective systems available for clearing the air inside a smoke-filled room or for banishing unpleasant odors.

One popular brand, priced at $300, is the Ionic Breeze. This air purifying system works by emitting negatively charged ions that bond with positively charged particles, including those that make up smoke and bad smells. The bonded ions become extremely heavy to float, and drop to the purifier?s collection plate. These fallen particles may be wiped away by a cloth. Ionizing purifier systems don?t remove dust in the air, and Consumer Reports has issued a statement to this effect.

Low Ozone Air Purifiers

Low ozone air purifiers oxidize pollutants, resulting in purer indoor air for us to breathe. If you?re concerned about odors, a low ozone air purifier is probably not what you need as it tends to give off a metallic smell. Be cautioned also that these purifiers emit ozone, which may be harmful to the health, especially when inhaled in high concentrations. Low ozone air purifiers cost about $500, and are best when combined with ozone air purifiers.

Air Purifiers With Air Filters

A purifier outfitted with an air filter like the 3M Filtrete may be what you need if the smells you are trying to eliminate have to do with pet dander and dust. Costing around $70, air purifiers with air filters are best for confined spaces, so having a few air filter purifiers for your home might be a good idea. The filters require replacing every quarter.

HEPA Air Purifiers

The popular high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) purifiers are good at removing airborne allergens, dirt and dust, but they don?t do as well on smoke and smells. HEP air purifiers are also higher-priced than most air purifiers.

UV Air Purifiers

Air purifiers based on ultra-violet (UV) light technology kill viruses and bacteria, but are not particularly effective against odors. UV air purifiers are the most complex of the air purifiers, and are often installed in air ducts where airborne microorganisms pass through. Because of their sterilizing effect, these systems are ideal for hospitals and government buildings.

Window Air Conditioners are used in homes and small offices. They are a bit more expensive than the portable air conditioners, depending on their tonnage. People needing them for temporary use prefer to rent them and pay charges on a monthly basis.

There are several companies that deal in temperature solutions. Such companies provide their air conditioners on a rental basis. When a requirement for a cooling system is placed to the company, they send their representatives to inspect the area that requires cooling. Based on the volume of air in it, the tonnage of the air conditioner is decided. Since Window Air Conditioners are fitted on windows, installing them requires a bit of carpentry work. The carpenter fits in a frame for the air conditioner. After the air conditioner is installed, all gaps between the frame and its body are sealed to prevent any draft from entering the room.

Before the Window Air Conditioner is actually installed, an application form is to be filled. On this form, along with other details, the monthly rent is also mentioned. Some companies are open to negotiations and offer attractive concessions. Renting an air conditioner for a longer period helps in the negotiations. Short-term rentals are more expensive. Along with the application form, a maintenance contract is also signed. This contract entitles the parties renting the air conditioner to avail themselves of maintenance services on the air conditioner. In most cases, maintenance on a rented air conditioner is free and is the responsibility of the company providing the air conditioner on rent.

Window Air Conditioners of all capacities are available for rent. They can be used for home, office or other commercial purposes. Rentals may be given for a single day or even a couple of years. The rent may be a few dollars a month, depending on the capacity and brand name of the air conditioner.

A whole house air purifier system, added to existing central HVAC equipment, is not a cost effective solution for home air quality.

With the exception of those who can afford both types, our money is best spent on other aspects of the indoor air quality situation.

Since such a filtration system shares the central system's blower and ductwork, the first concern must be the condition of the HVAC (Heating, Ventilating, Air Conditioning) internals and ducts.

Dirty HVAC systems and ductwork will spew fine particles. Adding an expensive upstream filter system will not change this.

Standard fiberglass HVAC air filters are installed ahead of motors and fans to protect them from sandpaper-grit sized particles, not as air purifiers.

Central HVAC blower systems, which may seem powerful, with up to 1000 cubic foot per minute (cfm) airflow, do not set up a strong enough air current in most areas of the house to be good air purifiers. The air flow at the duct is about as strong as a small fan.

Air from whole house registers does not flow evenly through the cross section of the home, it seeks the path of least resistance. Cooled air cuts a path straight to the bottom, without sweeping the upper nooks and crannies.

Warmed air fans out along the ceiling until it finds a cool surface to start a downdraft. Where corners, steps or obstacles are encountered, eddies form and particles accumulate. While the house as a whole may receive many air changes per hour, the net result in the lower flow areas is impure air.

Picture a meandering stream, with surging bank cuts and rapids, followed by lazy flats with sandbars the velocity is not uniform across the whole stream. This is not an efficient model for air purifiers.

With a whole house purification system, the HVAC blower must run all the time. Home HVAC blowers are not powerful enough to draw air through a large, tightly sealed, whole house HEPA air filter. They must be protected from overheating which might occur with an ordinary dirty fiberglass furnace filter.

HEPA filters create serious static backpressure, so they cannot be installed directly into the standard residential system. Vendors have incorporated costly bypassing vent circuits and more powerful secondary filter blower mechanisms to get around this. Partial bypass systems are grossly inefficient, allowing dirty air to bypass through the main duct.

Air duct cleaning, an expensive job for fully qualified professionals, should be considered before a whole house air purifier installation is purchased. Many consumers are unhappy with their central air filtration installation, only to discover the vendor and contractor passing the buck to the other.

We take our central air conditioning systems for granted, out of sight and mind. Adding a whole house air cleaner could change our perception. When a portable air purifier fails, we return it without interruption of heating or cooling. You won't be returning unsatisfactory home modifications to a vendor.

Old folk wisdom applies here: “If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it.”

For best indoor air quality remove all toxic sources, ventilate often, clean HVAC system including coils, pans and ducts, upgrade present furnace filter, use premium chemical-capable portable room air purifiers in bedrooms, put less expensive HEPA air purifiers elsewhere.

With additional money where available, consider installing a central vacuum system for the whole house, which exhausts 100% of all dirty air outside. Or choose a quality sealed HEPA filter vacuum cleaner.

The air we breathe contains contamination in the form of water vapor and air borne particles. During the compression process an air compressor concentrates these contaminants and depending on the age of the air compressor can even add contamination in the form of oil carryover. Basically, a modern air compressor amplifies the damaging effect of water vapor and airborne particles by virtue of the compression process. If you breathing in some dusty, humid air, your air compressor is feeling it far more than you are. Water vapor can be particularly destructive to the air compressor but it doesn?t end there. Remember the whole reason you have an air compressor is to run your air tools and other accessories. A compressor by itself isn?t very useful. It?s the air tools it powers! An air tool can get some serious damage over time by pumping it full of dirty compressed air and you may find your favorite impact wrench just doesn?t have the same power it used to a few years ago. The problem may not be the impact but the dirty and wet air you are pumping through it.

Modern air compressors have several methods to combat this problem. Some have built in aftercoolers and water separators to remove excess moisture. In some applications this may be all you require. It you are working in much harsher conditions or the tools you are powering require cleaner air, you may need to consider compressed air filters to clean the air further.

Ingersoll Rand has been the leader in air compressors for literally decades and they produce a full line of filters, refrigeration dryers, desicant dryers, and cooling systems for modern air compressors. Their air filters come with a differential pressure indicator to give the operator a quick and easy reminder of how much life is left in the filter element. Also, the Oleophobic filter media actively repels oil and water to reduce pressure drop and keep operating expenses down to a minimum. Typical filter media soaks up oil and water increasing pressure drop. This reduces the efficiency of the air filter and will produce higher operating costs.

One important lesson to remember is that just because you have the lastest air filters on your shop air compressor, the compressed air is not safe to breathe. The compressed air should not be used for breathing air applications unless it is treated with all applicable codes and regulations. An air impact wrench is not as sensitive as your lungs and you don?t want even small amounts of lubricating oil deposited in your lungs.

Air purifier filters can have a huge impact on the choice of air purifier we choose to buy, as many of us do not wish to incur the time and expense involved with regular replacement of these air cleaning filters. As the effectiveness of your air cleaner is dependent on keeping it well maintained and running smoothly, it is wise to consider whether you want to deal with air purifier filters before you buy.

One of the most effective air cleaning technologies available today is that used in the HEPA air purification systems, said to remove 99.97% of particulates from the air. This type of air cleaner, however, employs special air purifier filters, which must be changed on a regular basis in order to maintain the system?s efficiency.

There are also air purifiers available which don?t need air purifier filters electronic air purifiers do not require air cleaning filters to work. This system works by gathering particles from the air on collecting plates inside the cleaner, and while these do not require regular replacement, the filterless air purifier still needs some maintenance to remain at optimum efficiency ? the collecting plates must be cleaned regularly.

The very job that air purifiers do ? removing particles and dust from our air that we do not wish to breathe in ? necessitates some maintenance, as these particles will gather within the cleaner and will need to be disposed of. But while both filterless systems and those that employ air purifier filters require some upkeep to remain effective, this is minimal in both cases. The job itself involves only the simple wiping down of collection plates, or quickly changing a filter ? the problem is remembering to do it!

And once you establish the habit, this simple air purifier filter maintenance will become a part of your routine. So don?t allow the thought of changing air purifier filters determine your choice of air cleaner ? choose the system that is best for your family, and remember that the small amount of maintenance that comes with any air purifier is worth the work. Better those particles on your air purifier filter than in your lungs!

You need to think about air purifier filters before you buy your air purifier.

With the increased concern in today?s society over environmental pollution, it?s enough to make you wonder whether the air you?re breathing is doing you more harm than good. While it?s no secret that outside air pollution can be hazardous to those with chronic respiratory problems, what about the air in your own home?

According to a recent study by the American Environmental Protection Agency, over 170 million people in the United States currently live in places where the level of smog in the air is poisoning their bodies. Consider this: on days when smog levels are high, environmental agencies often recommend that people remain within their homes. Buy what about the air inside? How can you keep dangerous outdoor pollution from infiltrating your living space? No home is ever completely airtight, which means that some of that polluted air is inside your house — right now.

How can you protect yourself and your family from this kind of harmful environment? Indoor air purifiers have been developed with your health and safety in mind. An indoor purifier works for you — to cleanse your air and bring you peace of mind.

Indoor air purifiers function in a similar way to an air conditioner: your home?s air is drawn into the system, filtered, cleansed, and re-circulated back into the house. The process is meant to deliver clean, pure air to you and your family — the way nature intended.

Regular air filters, while they can be helpful, simply can?t provide you with the quality of air your family needs to stay healthy. Instead of simply removing larger-sized particles, an indoor air purifier will literally capture and kill airborne allergens and viruses before they reach you. This is extremely beneficial when it comes time to clean your purifier. Regular air filters, when they are changed, pose the risk of re-releasing some of the airborne impurities back into the air, but with a purifier, the harmful particles have already been nullified, keeping you safe.

Another beneficial feature of modern indoor air purifiers is a technological advancement that automatically detects when your purification filter needs to be changed. There?s no need to worry about changing your filter on time — your system will let you know, so that you can just focus on breathing pure, clean air. In fact, indoor air purifiers are so easy to use that changing the filter cartridge is the only thing you?ll ever need to do. The controls are user-friendly, so that annual cartridge replacement is a breeze: no cleaning required.

Don?t spend time worrying about your health — with an indoor air purifier, you can breathe deeply with confidence.

As its name implies, the purpose of air purifiers is to purify the air around us so that the air we breathe in is almost free from dust, allergens, and other air-borne pollutants. Therefore, air purifiers have two main functions, which seem to be similar, but are not. The first one is to rid the air of microbes and germs and the other is to remove unhealthy allergy-causing agents, such as dust and pollens, from the air. Thus, with a purifier you can minimize the occurrences of allergy attacks you may have during any season and improve the health of the every individual.

When you want to use an air purifier at home, be aware that you?ll need to replace the filters or to clean the steel rods, depending on which type of air purifier that you?ll be using. How effective your air cleaner will be depends very much on how well maintained it is and how smoothly it is running. So, it is wise to consider whether you want to deal with air purifier filters before you buy.

A highly efficient air purifier will circulate air through its filters and trap allergens, toxins, and other air pollutants to remove them from the air. The solutions that are the most common in the market are mechanical filters or air cleaning filter that use special materials, such as life charcoal, to filter the incoming air.

Air purifiers which don?t need air purifier filters are also available. Electronic air purifiers do not require air cleaning filters to work. To provide a home with some basic air purification, you may want to consider using electronic filters.

There are many selections and filtering styles that you can use such as UV, ozone, ionic or an electrostatic air purifier, which zaps the contaminants in the air when they pass through the filtering system. After you have decided which air purifier is best for your needs you should research the kind of air filter that will be best suited for your home.

Home air filters can be purchased in different forms. The cheapest filter being a fiberglass layered air filter. However, this style is not very effective in removing the smaller pollutants in the air. Your next choice is a pleated air filter which will remove more contaminants than the fiberglass filter. The best filter is the Hepa air filter systems which are known to remover 99% of your air contaminants.

When choosing your air filter pay attention to the MERV (Minimum Efficiency Rate Value) rating. This air purifier rating governs the industries standard for efficiency. The higher the number the more efficient the filter is in removing the air pollutants.

Air filters are used to remove contaminants from the air such as dust, pollen, mold spores and bacteria. They can be used in internal combustion engines, gas compressors, diving air compressors and ventilation systems.

Engines usually require paper, foam, or cotton filters. Some man made environments like buildings and planes use foam filters, pleated paper, or spun fiberglass filters. Another type of filter uses a static electrical charge to catch dust particles.

Cotton air filters are considered to be the best because of technological advantages, durability, air flow and filtration.

Paper filters are usually used in automobiles because they can be tossed away and they are relatively inexpensive.

Synthetic web formations are also used for air filtration and are made from polyester fiber. They can withstand high temperatures (about 250F) and are used for industrial, commercial, or residential application. Cotton and polyester can be blended together or with other fibers to resulting in a wide range of performance characteristics. Sometimes polypropylene is used to enhance chemical resistance because of its lower temperature tolerance. In many types of HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air Filter) filters, synthetic fibers known as micro-fibers are used.

Spun fibreglass is used for in-duct filters for home air heating and air conditioning systems. These come in many densities and sizes, are inexpensive and can be thrown away. The less dense the higher the airflow, but they don't remove as much dust as the denser ones. The denser filters remove more dust but are more expensive and don't let air pass through as easily. They can also become more loaded with dust and dirt but they are still cheaper to use than the pleated-paper filters of the same size.

Cotton is used for engine filters because it has excellent filtration and air flow but filters particles much smaller than the actual holes. Oiled layers of cotton gauze are used for high performance air filters. Dust particles caught in the filter are held suspended in the cotton gauze and become part of the filter medium which increases filtration but doesn't obstruct airflow to an engine. They outlast paper filters but are more expensive. However, over a service interval of 50,000 miles the disposable paper filter will have already been replaced several times.

The combustion air filter and the cabin air filter are the two main types of air filters used in automobiles. The combustion air filter prevents separate particle of matter from entering the engine's combustion chambers. When the oil is changed, this filter is usually changed but may be changed at longer or shorter times, depending on the use and condition of the vehicle.

Older vehicles that have carburetors or throttle body fuel injection usually use a cylindrical air filter which is 14 inches in diameter and 3 inches tall. These are positioned above the carburetor or throttle body and secured in place with a metal lid.

Another pleated-paper filter is the cabin air filter that is placed in the outside-air intake for the vehicle's passenger compartment and come in different shapes and sizes. If the cabin air filters are improperly removed and reinstalled it can lead to water leaks and in rare cases, a cracked windshield. So if you don't know what you're doing it's best to get a professional to replace them.

Air conditioners that can be made to move from one place to another on casters are called Portable Air Conditioners. These can be as large as window units, but they can be easily transported on their wheeled casters. Portable Air Conditioners find great use in industries, warehouses, temporary businesses, and more.

Some industrial warehouses are so large that they cannot be cooled by a single central cooling unit. Such spaces rent Portable Air Conditioners for their spot cooling needs. As their workers or machines move, the air conditioners can also be made to move along with them. Several machines in factories need such spot cooling. Even places where many computers are installed require cooling for their optimum use.

Portable Air Conditioners are specially designed for rough use hence, their capacities are higher than the usual ones. Portable Air Conditioners with cooling capacities of 3.5 to 60 tons can be rented. They are available with both Freon and evaporation technology. Air conditioners that work on evaporation principles are more expensive to rent than Freon ones.

Portable Air Conditioners are also rented by organizers of functions and events such as weddings, live performances, football matches, and more. Rented air conditioners are placed at strategic positions so that there is an average cooling throughout the place. Once the program is finished, the air conditioner can just be wheeled away to the next location.

Vehicles on the move sometimes rent Portable Air Conditioners if they require cooling ? especially when there is some shipment aboard that requires cooling, such as perishable foods. Water transport vehicles such as boats and ships also find it easier to rent a Portable Air Conditioner for their cooling needs.

One can rent Portable Air Conditioners both on a long term and a short term basis. Factories require long term rentals ? their rentals can extend to a couple of months or even years. But social events may rent Portable Air Conditioners for a day or so. Depending on the type of air conditioner rented and the period for which it is rented, the cost may range from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars.

Well you have your new air conditioning system installed and are very happy with your decision to make the investment. It was worth every penny and you have no regrets. To keep your new air conditioner working at peak efficiency for many years you need to begin a regular maintenance program that includes changing the filter.

This is one of the most important things you can do to get the best performance from your air conditioning and heating equipment. By changing your air conditioner filter and not allowing it to become dirty and restrict air flow you will enable the air conditioner to operate with minimal power consumption, reduce the risk of break downs and keep the amount of dust in your home at a minimum.

As the air conditioner filter or furnace filter becomes dirty it will gradually begin to restrict air flow through the system. Air conditioners are designed to have a certain amount of air flow for each ton of cooling. Four hundred cfm per ton to be exact. As the filter becomes dirty it will reduce air flow to the point that air flow falls below these design parameters.

When this happens it creates the effect of low load conditions on the air conditioner and the operating pressures begin to drop. Under normal conditions the evaporating temperature in the system will be above 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

Because this evaporating temperature is below the room temperature, and the dew point temperature, condensation forms on the evaporator coil from the air as it passes through the evaporator coil. This is good because it helps maintain a comfortable humidity in your home. The condensation drips from the evaporator and drains away from the unit.

When an air conditioner filter becomes dirty enough to reduce air flow, it has the same effect on the system as low load conditions. When air conditioning equipment operates under low load conditions the evaporator coil can ice up. Once ice begins to form, the problem gets progressively worse and eventually a block of ice forms around the evaporator and there is virtually no air flow.

The ice forms because as the heat load on the system diminishes the evaporating temperature in the evaporator begins to drop. When the evaporating temperature drops below 32 degrees Fahrenheit frost begins to form on the evaporator coil.

As frost begins to form it further reduces the amount of air flow and the situation becomes worse. As mentioned before when equipment is allowed to operate like this, eventually the evaporator will become a block of ice and the unit will have to be turned off and allowed to thaw.If this situation occurs it can also damage the evaporator to the point where it begins to leak refrigerant and may even have to be replaced, which will be very expensive.

There are other conditions that can cause these symptoms but this is one of the most common. Frost forming on one of the lines coming out of the air handler is an indication of low air flow among other things. The first thing to do is check your air conditioner filter before calling for service.
